The School of Tourism Management at Sun Yat-sen University, organizer of the field-based course, has long been dedicated to exploring how tourism can support rural revitalization. Since the launch of the Azheke Plan in 2018, Azheke Village in Yuanyang County—the course’s primary case study site—has adopted a sustainable development model based on an endogenous, village-collective and enterprise-led approach integrates tourism development, the preservation of traditional dwellings, and a community dividend-sharing system.

Building on this foundation, the course brings students into Azheke and neighboring villages for immersive fieldwork, encouraging multi-perspective observation of tourism operations, testing theoretical frameworks against real-world conditions, and fostering critical thinking in response to evolving social, cultural, and economic dynamics.
