Jakarta, Indonesia – The 37th Joint Meeting of the UN Tourism Commission for East Asia and the Pacific and the UN Tourism Commission for South Asia (37th CAP-CSA) convened in Jakarta on April 15-16, 2025. Co-organized by the UN Tourism and Indonesia’s Ministry of Tourism, the event brought together tourism leaders including Zurab Pololikashvili, Secretary-General of UN Tourism, and representatives from 17 member states. The World Tourism Alliance (WTA) participated as an Affiliate Member of UN Tourism .
The meeting showcased the latest developments in the tourism sector across the Asia-Pacific region. Mr. Zurab Pololikashvili presented an overview of the achievements of UN Tourism over the past year in key areas such as tourism insights, expertise, investment, innovation, and education. During the meeting, UN Tourism also hosted the first Regional Conference on "Tourism Policy on Circular Economy", aiming to encourage public-private sector collaboration in tackling challenges like waste reduction, improving resource efficiency, and reshaping supply chains.
The WTA has maintained close cooperation with UN Tourism, establishing a joint research working group in 2023 to explore the theme of "Tourism: A Driver for Shared Prosperity". The study analyzed 12 representative cases across seven countries (China, Albania, Indonesia, Jordan, Peru, Rwanda, and Vanuatu), demonstrating tourism’s role in poverty alleviation and rural revitalization. The findings, published on UN Tourism’s official website, provide valuable insights into achieving inclusive growth through tourism. During the recent meeting, UN Tourism Secretary-General Mr. Pololikashvili, along with other senior officials, and WTA representatives commemorated this successful collaboration. Both organizations have pledged to continue joint research efforts to advance sustainable and inclusive development in global tourism, reinforcing tourism’s potential as a catalyst for socioeconomic progress worldwide.
