The World Tourism Alliance (WTA) recently premiered a special five-episode edition of its micro-documentary series “Better Tourism, Better Life, Better World” across global channels of the Cable News Network (CNN).
The micro-documentary series, a collaborative effort between WTA, China Global Television Network (CGTN), and Future Plus Technologies (Beijing) Co., Ltd., has drawn from WTA’s Best Practice in Poverty Alleviation Through Tourism and Best Practices of Rural Revitalization Through Tourism. This initiative has broadcast twelve episodes over four seasons on various platforms including CGTN’s official website, mobile apps, and popular social media platforms such as YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, TikTok, and Weibo. Each episode delves into China’s grassroots villages, showcasing how the natural beauty of “Lucid Waters and Lush Mountains” is transformed into prosperous “Gold and Silver Mountains”, thereby improving the livelihoods of local communities. This narrative has captured widespread attention and acclaim within the tourism industry.
In 2021, China declared a historic victory in its battle against poverty, achieving the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development’s poverty alleviation targets ten years ahead of schedule, and significantly reducing the global poverty demographic. The micro-documentary shares China’s poverty reduction stories, experiences, and strategies, enhancing international exchange and understanding in this field, and leveraging culture and tourism as pivotal links for ongoing global poverty alleviation efforts. As a member of WTA, CNN has shown a keen interest in China’s endeavors in poverty alleviation and rural revitalization. The alliance and CNN, in alignment with the UN’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, have selected five episodes including “I’m an Actress”, “Nostalgia”, “A Sunny Hillside”, “Over the Mountain”, and “Yunqiu Mountain Celebrates Millennial Ancient Zhonghe Culture” from the series. These were re-edited with an international perspective and broadcast globally, sharing China’s sustainable development philosophies and successful tourism-driven poverty reduction stories with the world.
Looking forward, the WTA will continue to leverage its resources and platforms, uniting the strength of its global members and partners to consolidate the achievements in poverty eradication, further rural revitalization research, and disseminate China’s experiences in tourism-led poverty reduction, contributing significantly to the global poverty alleviation and development agenda.
