WTA attends the 2022 International Seminar on Global Poverty Reduction Partnerships

On November 11, the 2022 International Seminar on Global Poverty Reduction Partnerships was convened in Beijing. Themed on “Shared Development – Poverty Reduction and Sustainable Rural Revitalization,” the Seminar aimed to share policies and practices in the area of poverty reduction and development, strengthen South-South and triangular cooperation in global poverty reduction and development, push forward the Global Development Initiative and the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and contribute solutions to global poverty reduction. Liu Shijun, Secretary General of the World Tourism Alliance (WTA), attended the event with more than 100 delegates, including representatives from the Rome headquarters of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and its representative office in China, the Secretariat of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, the World Bank, the Asian Development Bank, foreign embassies in China, and renowned experts and scholars at home and abroad.

The opening ceremony was attended and addressed by Mr. Xia Gengsheng, Deputy Director-General of the National Rural Revitalization Administration; Mr. Siddharth Chatterjee, UN Resident Coordinator in China; Mr. Ye Anping, Director of South-South and Triangular Cooperation Division, FAO; Mr. Wang Wei, Special Adviser to the President of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD); and Mr. Stanlake Samkange, Senior Director for Strategic Partnerships, World Food Programme.

In his speech, Mr. Xia said that the Seminar had become an institutionalized platform for China, the FAO and other domestic and foreign institutions to share good practices in poverty reduction and contributed to the implementation of Global Development Initiative and the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. He hoped that all participating institutions would continue to vigorously leverage their respective strengths, bolster daily communication via the platform of the seminar, share their latest research results on poverty reduction, and jointly recommend good practices of global poverty reduction. He asked participating institutions to play a bigger role in recommending best practices, developing knowledge products and promoting personnel exchange, and continuously enhance their influence through cooperation and benefits sharing.

As to the development of rural industries and poverty reduction, WTA Secretary General Liu Shijun gave a speech entitled “Developing Cultural and Tourism Industries for Poverty Reduction and Rural Revitalization.” He highlighted the important role of the cultural and tourism industries in global poverty reduction and rural revitalization at the national and industry levels, and their cultural, social and ecological implications based on the WTA’s poverty reduction work in recent years, and won warm response and recognition from the audience.

The Seminar was co-organized by the International Poverty Reduction Center in China, the IFAD, the FAO, the World Food Programme and China Internet Information Center. At the Seminar, Global Poverty Report 2022 and Global Poverty Reduction Case Series 2022 were released, the award winners of the third Global Call for Good Practices in Poverty Reduction were announced and awards presented, and the fourth global call launched. All this was to contribute to global poverty governance and the achievement of the UN 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.
